Who do we commune

The word Comm-union infers that those who gather for this sacred meal, have something in common or union.    Jesus distributed communion to his disciples who had been instructed by  him for three years, rather than at the feeding of the 5,000.  Finally, the Apostle Paul instructs, "Whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.  Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup."

Because God's Word gives some words of caution regarding the Lord's Supper, Lutherans do also.  We reserve the serving of communion to those who rightly understand what is taking place, who are able to examine themselves, and are in agreement or union with our Lutheran faith.  This does not mean that others are not Christians.

Lutherans, like several other church bodies, practice close or closed communion.  Either word can be used.  It simply means that we hear Paul's words of warning regarding this meal.  Medicines are good, if they are used in the right way, at the right time and place.

Peace Lutheran observes a practice that was observed by most all Christian churches until recent history, of taking care in the serving of communion.  For those who are not members of Peace Lutheran or a sister congregation of The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, they are welcome to come to the communion rail for a word of blessing.   A Pastor's class is regularly offered to those who are interested in learning more about our Lutheran faith, with an interest in becoming a confessing member of our family of faith.

If you have not read it already, please consult the other tab regarding Lutheran beliefs about communion.
